Course Description:

This course will provide a conceptual and topical introduction to the field of medical sociology. Medical sociology is concerned with the cultural practices and norms surrounding health, illnesses, hospitals, and health care systems. In this course, we will discuss and answer questions like: why do some people receive different treatment for the same illness? Why is it so difficult to create a national healthcare system that works for everyone? How do new physical and psychological disturbances become medical conditions? By the end of the course, students from all disciplinary and professional backgrounds will be conversant in contemporary debates on American healthcare, the foundations of inequality in medical treatment, and the social organization of life and death.
