40th Street Artist-in-Residence Program (AIR) Intern

10-12 hours/week

September 2016-December 2016 with the option to stay on through April/May 2017

The intern will work at the 40th Street Artist-in-Residence Program (AIR), a program that grants free studios and exhibition space to six West Philadelphia-based visual artists and assists in exhibits and career development while engaging in meaningful arts-based community outreach. The program is housed at 4007 Chestnut Street First Floor and 4013 Chestnut Street.

Overall responsibilities involve: artist coordination, community outreach, gallery exhibit installation, and documentation of arts events and artist projects.

Specific duties include:

  • Coordinating resident artists' outreach efforts with new and ongoing community partners such as West Philadelphia schools, senior centers, faith communities, nursing homes, hospitals, shelters, etc. 
  • Assisting resident artists with their exhibitions and projects in the program's gallery and studios.
  • Distributing printed marketing material to local retailers, organizations, and the general public; promoting public events using social media
  • Documenting programming via photos, video, attendance records, etc.

Skills and Experience:

  • Event planning experience is a plus.
  • General familiarity with and appreciation of visual art is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop (or similar design program), blogging such as Word Press or Blogger, and social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) is required.
  • Experience with art exhibit installation and/or art-making is a plus.
