  • URBS Director Elaine Simon featured in The Pennsylvania Gazette

    URBS program director Elaine Simon was featured on last page "window" section of the March/April issue of The Pennsylvania Gazette with one of hundreds of photos that she took of the demolition of University City High School. Photographing the long process of the schools deconstruction offered her a way to come to grips with the experience of neighborhood change. Check out the article here

  • Historical-Spatial Internship on Skid Row in Philadelphia

    Stephen Metraux, Penn PhD in Soiology and URBS Graduate Certificate recipient, has begun archival work on Philadelphia's Skid Row and has come across detailed inventories (building by building and resident by resident) of the 1950's era Callowhill area in and around the Row, among other things detailing life in that area that were collected as part of two contemporary studies. There is a ton of original data here that he has study ideas for, and as part of these he would like to do some descriptive things with the building inventories. Some funding may be available.

  • Multimedia Internship on Educational Inequality | Erica Kitzmiller

    Erika Kitzmiller, a faculty member at Teachers College-Columbia University and a Penn alumna, is looking for a student to assist her with video production and web site development for a project on educational inequality.  The project, The Roots of Educational Inequality, is a book-length manuscript that examines the political, social, and economic factors that contributed to the escalation of inequality in Philadelphia’s public schools with a close examination of one of these schools, Germantown High School.

    DDOT's Research Internship Program engages full-time students to work on specific research topics around the agency. The internship program allows DDOT to conduct research into topics of interest while also serving as a resource for students to acquire practical skills.
