Stele with the Laws of Hammurapi, King of Babylon (1792-1750 BCE).
This is a photo of the original stele, which is in the Louvre (a modern
replica is displayed in our Museum). For a close-up of the scene at the
top, see the next slide. Beneath the scene, the entire lower part of the
stele contains the text of Hammurapi's laws, engraved on the stone. Many
of the laws are comparable to those in the Hebrew Bible, while others are
similar but differ at crucial points.
