Reflection # 6

  • Integration of Available and Appropriate Technology into Classroom Practice

What

For baseline evidence I have chosen to include a part of my application essay to the MCEP. Even though this baseline evidence represents the use of some aspects of technology in my classroom, such as Vernier equipment, but it doesn't represents any applications of technology that I designed.

Later evidence is a web-project assignment from Inorganic Chem 506. This web-project was designed for use in my own classroom. This later evidence shows my growth in design, integration and application of technology in my classroom.

How

The early evidence shows the lack of use of any form of technology in teaching chemistry. I used a more traditional style, blackboard and chalk, in my old lesson plans. However, the later evidence shows how I integrated appropriate technology into my teaching style.

Why

I chose the web-project from Chem 506 as an interesting piece not only to show my growth in applying appropriate technology in my classroom, but also because it was the first time I utilized non-traditional technology with my own students at Brandywine High School.

Conclusion :

Nowadays, students spend hours playing video games, chatting online, text messaging, and listening to their favorite music on IPods. Science becomes a more interesting topic when it relates to daily life experiences and is offered in a modern way. It's more effective for students to go online and learn about the periodic table of elements through different interactive web-sites, instead of listening to a teacher holding a stick and pointing to an old poster hanging on the wall. Applying appropriate technology in classroom was another fruit of the MCEP.
