The Chemistry of…
End of the Year Project
The end
of the year presentations are fast approaching. So, what are you going to do?
You are going to demonstrate your plethora of knowledge of chemistry by
choosing an everyday product and explaining how it works…using chemistry, of
course J
The presentations
are between 3-5 minutes long. This
project has three parts.
1)
Part
A – Your hardcopy for me (50 points)
2)
Part
B – Your presentation (40 points)
3)
Part
C – Your feedback forms (input about your classmates presentations) (10 points)
So,
what do you need to do?
Examples: Chemistry of…
…fireworks …autumn leaves …water …butane lighters …glow
sticks …TNT …radon …diamonds …soap …alcohol …pollution …cosmetics …fabric …dyes
…art …magnets …crime scene investigations …liquid explosives …photography
…bulletproof glass …polyester …PVC …rubber …Teflon …ozone layer …diapers …rust
…Alka Seltzer …rechargeable batteries …dynamite …gun powder …nuclear power
…fertilizer …fireflies …Botox …aspirin …PMS …Viagra …caffeine …nailpolish
remover …gasoline …silicone gel breast implants …latex …gemstones …poison
(arsenic) …air bags
There are
so many other topics. However, if you
choose one that is not listed above, you MUST get it approved by Ms.
Ruggirello. Either way, your topic
selection, including a summary, is due no later than Friday, May 11, 2007.
1.
What
is the chemical formula and structure for your product or what are the
formulas/structures for the chemicals that are involved with your topic?
2.
What
is the balanced chemical reaction that takes place? How do you know that this is a chemical reaction and not a
physical change? How do you know that
the reaction is balanced?
3.
How
can you change the speed of the chemical reaction taking place?
4.
Explain
how your product works, using the principles of chemistry:
·
Mole
concept
·
Atomic
structure
·
The
chemical bond
·
Molecular
geometry
·
Intermolecular
interactions
· Conservation of energy
· Entropy concept
· Chemical kinetics/speed of
reaction
· Chemical reactions
5.
Are
there any safety considerations?
6.
Does
the product/topic affect your health or well-being in any way?
7.
What
is the purpose of your product/topic? Or how is it used?
8.
Can
you prepare a demonstration or bring in an example?
9.
What
kind of visual can you give for your audience?
10.
When was this developed and why is it
important?
