COURSE CONTENT:

This course is intended to be a general survey of contemporary Archaeological Method and Theory for first year graduate students. Prior archaeological background is not a prerequisite for this course, although a general understanding of archaeological and anthropological concepts would be useful. In addition to traditional approaches and the now widely-accepted "Processual" perspective of the majority of North American archaeologists, the course will cover alternative theoretical approaches (e.g. Structural, Poststructural, Symbolic, Cognitive, Critical Theory, Contextual, Postprocessual, Marxist, Interpretive, etc.) and critically analyze their potential contributions to the discipline. Specific case studies will be used as examples of the application of different theoretical and methodological approaches as often as possible. Because of the massive amount of material relating to method and theory in archaeology and the limited amount of time available during the semester, the course coverage will be selective, not exhaustive.

The format of the course will be lecture and discussion. Questions may be asked before, during, and after lectures as long as they are not too disruptive. Organized discussion of readings and lecture material will take place after a short introductory lecture by the professor. My goal is to involve all students in lively discussion and debate using a seminar format. Small groups of students will be responsible for introducing the weekly theme and leading the discussion of the required readings for each class session. Groups responsible the weekly readings are encouraged to be innovative in their oral presentations (handouts, charts, debates, graphics, etc.). A list of student groups and dates for assigned themes will be available before the second class meeting.

REQUIRED READINGS:

A considerable number of reading are assigned for this course. A detailed reading syllabus will be provided and may be periodically updated throughout the semester. Two required textbooks have been assigned. A "bulk pack reader" has been assembled for the course that includes a number of important articles on archaeological method and theory. This will be available for purchase at the Copy Center, basement of the Towne Building (Engineering), 220 South 33rd Street. A number of books on archaeological method and theory have been placed on permanent reserve in the Museum Library, 3rd floor of the University Museum, under the course title, Anthropology 600. A list of these books is available at the circulation desk. Weekly reading assignments will come from the texts and the reader. You are encouraged to seek out additional material related to the weekly topics in the Museum Library. You should become familiar with the current journals in archaeology. At times, new materials may be added to the readings. I will informe you of any changes in the readings by email or using the Anthropology 600 home page (still "under construction"). I strongly suggest that the students form study groups to help cover and understand the readings and lectures more efficiently, as this has been an effective strategy in the past.

GRADING:

The course grade will be based on three (3) short papers (each worth 25%), in-class leading of discussions, and general class participation (25%).

Written Papers: Three short papers or essays will be written during the semester. The first assignment will be a review and critique of a recent publication in archaeology in light of the materials covered the first third of the semester (the publication will be assigned by the professor). The second paper will be a review of a published archaeological site report (an approved list of site reports will be distributed later in the semester; site reports not on the list must be approved by professor). The third paper will be an essay on the issue of temporal and spatial scale in archaeology. The goal is to integrate what you have learned from lecture, readings, and discussion and apply this knowledge in the short papers. These papers are not research papers, per se, but you may explore bibliographic materials beyond the assigned materials. You are also encouraged to incorporate insights from what you have learned in the other core courses. I will give more information on the specifics of each paper later in the semester. The papers should be between 5-10 word-processed pages of double-spaced text. Prepare your papers using the American Antiquity style guide for citation and reference format (October 1992 issue; Vol 57, pages 749-770 or October or a copy of the guide is also on the Internet at the Society for American Archaeology Website http://www.saa.org/Publications/ StyleGuide/styframe.html). If you use notes, please put them after the body of the text as "endnotes." References Cited means just that--you should include all and only the references that are actually cited in the paper. References and endnotes should be single-spaced. Please submit two (2) copies of each paper by each due date. I will provide more detailed information on the writing assignments later in the semester.

ATTENDANCE:

Students will be expected to show up for all classes, although this is not compulsory. Because the course meets for 3 hours once a week, missing a class or two could negatively affect student performance. Please get the notes from other students if you have to miss a class.

I will be available during office hours and after class if you have any questions regarding the course material, the department's graduate program, or archaeology in general. I also would appreciate your comments, and will be happy to make appointments for other times if my office hours conflict with your schedule.
