Policies: attire, grading, etc.

Safety first:

LAB GOGGLES, CLOSED-TOED SHOES,
AND FULL-LENGTH PANTS!

bullet

You will not be admitted to lab without proper attire; if you are a fan of your shorts and sandals, please keep a change of clothes with you.  Even slipping on some scrubs will work.  Pants must be long enough to offer full protection of your legs.

bullet

Yes, goggles are annoying, but my job is to make sure nothing like this happens to you: [Caution: graphic link!]
While soft contacts are allowed, they are not recommended; if chemicals do manage to get past your goggles, the contacts can trap them against your eye.

bullet

Use the hood! (but DON'T STICK YOUR HEAD INSIDE WHILE WORKING!)

bullet  Come to class prepared with your pre-lab and work carefully, deliberately.  Rushing makes you careless.
bullet  If you have any questions, ASK!  I may not be able to answer you right away, but I will find someone who DOES know the answer, or find out and get back to you as soon as possible.
bulletAnd absolutely no consuming food or drink in the lab!

GRADES

Ultimately, Dr. Mallory is in charge of assigning final grades for the course.
She has already decided on the grading policies, and typically gives out A-level grades to a maximum of 30-35% of her students.
Average grade on a lab report should be approx. 80, and that will be the score you will most likely receive..

That's right: you are part of an extremely smart and talented group of students, and a B is considered Average.  Please don't hate us for it.

More in-depth grade break-downs are listed under the Lab Grades page.

The Break-down

Each lab report (#1-8) is worth 100 points (total 800).
The Special Lab Report (#9) is worth 300 points.
Each hour exam is 150 points (total 450).
    GRAND TOTAL: 1550 points.

The "technique" grade.

20 out of your 100 points per lab report will be for "technique".
An average grade is 12/20.  If you get a 12, don't fret; it means that you didn't do anything WRONG, but you could improve through more thorough preparation, efficiency, and better yields.

Getting caught without gloves, or lab goggles on properly will reduce your "technique" grade (30% is Safety!).
...
So will leaving a mess!  A messy bench is a hazard to you, and also the people who use the bench after you!

Further details on technique is now under the Lab Grades section.

late penalties

Late pre-lab:-15 points flat (have them done BEFORE class!)*
Late Report:  -5 points for up to a day
-10 points for up to 1 week
-20 points for up to 2 weeks
-30 points for up to 3 weeks , etc.

                               *no penalty for Lab #1.

EXAMS

There are 3, during your Tuesday lecture period.  Don't miss them.
2/27, 3/27, 4/17.

Your Workspace and Common Areas

bulletKeep it clean!  Don't make me clean up for you.
Close reagent bottles, give counters a quick sponge-down, turn off the lights, pull down the hood sash.
Sloppy cleaning will show up under Technique..
bulletYour equipment belongs in your hood area and drawer; don't let it get away!  I will help you find a lost item if necessary.
bulletBalance rooms and reagent hoods are used by everybody; please respect that and don't leave a mess.
bulletJust because you're being safe doesn't mean other people around you are; always stay alert and keep those gloves and goggles on!
