Alex Chen

I am an MD-PhD student at Department of Anthropology and School of Medicine. My primary research interest centers on the power and potential of spatial and visual design on the practice of medicine and human health, in the context of investigating new cross-cultural entanglements brought on by the influx of Chinese investment, culture, and immigrants to the African continent. Issues of urban history, infrastructural development, and the cultural meaning of health and body are a few topics that I examine, and I am especially keen on exploring interdisciplinary and collaborative methods of ethnographic engagement and textual/visual narrative construction. My CV and portfolio is available at
