ARTH713 - GEND ISSUES/E ASIAN ART

Topic varies.
Section 301 - SEM
This course reconsiders issues in East Asian art through the lens of gender theory. It asks: How can we use and how applicable are gender critiques in the interpretation of East Asian Art? When we foreground gender, how does that allow us to reinterpret the work of art? Topics to be included: the construction of culture, particularly in confrontation with the “other” (such as “the West”); the place of the woman painter in traditional culture; the fetishization of the “feminine” as a marker of the “masculine”; and the transformation of gendered terminology in the construction of a new “modern” art and culture. A background in East Asian cultures, art history, or gender studies is highly recommended, and the course will be structured with students’ interests in mind.
