German students at Penn find successful careers in global business, in the art world, in the academy, and in the law. The major provides you with the language and cultural fluency, knowledge, and critical skills essential in an era of globalism. We offer a wide selection of courses in four languages (German, Dutch, Swedish, and Yiddish) and their literatures, in cultural studies, media theory, philosophy, history, psychology, film, environmental humanities, and business. Opportunities to study abroad enhance students’ linguistic and cultural sophistication and nuanced intercultural competence. Faculty—who have won an impressive assortment of international prizes for teaching and writing—are deeply committed to undergraduate education and often mentor majors in ongoing research projects and intellectual pursuits.
