Chemistry 501

Instructor: Dr. Bryan Roberts (aka: Yoda of POGILs)

Objectives of the class:

1. To learn via two complementary group learning models (more of the POGIL though):
POGIL, POGIL, POGIL, POGIL, POGIL, POGIL,POGIL,
which stands for
Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning....
PIM, PIM, PIM, PIM, PIM, PIM
which stands for Penn Inquiry Model....
*Process Oriented
*Guided Inquiry
*Learning model
*Develops concepts (via exploration)
*Starts with information provided
*Inductive (specific informaiton --> general principles)
*Application oriented
*Open inquiry
*Research model
*Uses concepts (by applying prior knowledge)
*Starts with a question then seeks information
*Deductive (general principles --> specific answer)

2. To understand General Chemistry and (Physical) Organic Chemistry... as summarized by 4 Enduring Understandings and 9 Core Ideas

Course Assignments:
Description/ Skill demonstrated:
Boyle's Law: Verification
Data Analysis: Use of Excel to analyze and graph data
Arrhenius Kinetics: ethoxide and methyl iodide
Data Analysis: Use of Excel to analyze and graph data
Minimum energy of 1,4-ditertbutylcyclohexane
Conformational Analysis: Use of Chem3D, MM2 to change conformation of molecule and calculate steric energy.  The assignment focuses on finding the conformation corresponding to the global minimum energy.
"Student-centered interactive sites: Virtual labs and data analysis"
1. Virtual lab/ data analysis options for traditional labs.
Web Analysis Project: The goal is to seek out and describe websites on certain topics which would be of interest and use to teachers.
