What is the Penn Science Teacher Institute (Penn STI)?


Components --

The Penn Science Teacher Institute is comprised of three major components:
  • Two masters degree programs for middle grades and secondary level science teachers -- The Master of Integrated Science Program and the Master of Chemistry Education Program,
  • Resource Center to support teacher-participants and graduates of the degree programs, and
  • Administrators' Science Education Academy to support building administrators in our Core Partner schools

Features of both degree programs --

Both the Master of Chemistry Education Program (MCEP) and the Master of Integrated Science Education Program (MISEP) have many common features:

  • 10 course programs with 8 of the courses in science content and 2 in science education
  • 26 months of courses over 3 consecutive summers and the 2 intervening academic years
  • 30 months to degree completion (typically a December degree)
  • Summer sessions are 8 weeks long (the fourth week of June through the third week of August), 4 days/week -- all day
  • Academic year sessions are held two Saturdays each month from September through May -- 8:00 am - 12:00 noon, 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm
  • 20 teacher cohort classes begin each Summer through in 2009
  • Courses are specially designed for science teachers with each course integrating science content and pedagogy
  • Content, materials and pedagogy aligned with science standards
  • Inclusion of forefront science research, real life applications and technology

No Teacher Left Behind! However, NO NEW COHORTS are being accepted!

  • MISEP and MCEP are open to ALL teachers at a tuition competitive with other area institutions -- but the programs are very unique!
  • Teacher participants from Core Partner School Districts receive stipends large enough to cover tuition and books.

National Academy of Sciences Committee on Prospering in the Global Economy in the 21st Century Recommendations to Congress Cites The Penn STI as a Model!

  • "Science and mathematics master’s programs: Provide grants to universities to
    offer 50,000 current middle-school and high-school science, math, and technology teachers (with or without science, math, or engineering degrees) 2-year, part-time master’s degree programs that focus on rigorous science and mathematics content and pedagogy over a 5-year period.
