Professional Development Opportunities

2-Day Workshops for High School Chemistry Teachers

  • The Penn STI Workshops focus on chemistry content, and each will be a combination of discussion, labs/demos, group work and may also include brief pre- and post-assessments of common misconceptions.  Participants will have time to share teaching/learning strategies and continue this discussion over the next academic year via an on-line group established for each workshop.
  • The Penn STI Workshops are co-developed and co-presented by a Penn Chemist and a graduate of the Master of Chemistry Education (MCE) Program. You get the best of both worlds -- a perspective from a state-of-the-art research chemist and an exemplary high school chemistry teacher.
  • The Penn STI Workshops are partially funded by The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation and the Penn STI.

August 2008 Workshops:

The Following Workshop is offered on Friday and Saturday, August 8 & 9:

  • Thermochemistry: Important (mis?)Conceptions
  • Co-Developed and Co-Presented by Dr. Tobias Baumgart, Penn Chemistry, & Carol Rulli, Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (formerly of Triton HS, NJ)
  • Our MCE graduates tell us that they can never learn enough about thermochemistry... What about you?

The Following Workshops are offered on Friday and Saturday, August 15 & 16:

  • Modeling Molecules: Historical Perspective to State of the Art
  • Co-Developed and Co-Presented by Dr. Jeffrey Saven, Penn Chemist, and Tom Loschiavo, Moorestown High School, NJ
  • What is a molecule?  How do we know molecules exist? How do we visualize molecules? X-ray Crystallography demonstration in Penn's Chemistry Department facility, modeling software, labs/demos...

...AND...

  • Teaching Difficult Chemistry Concepts with Fun & Easy Demos
  • Co-Developed and Co-Presented by Dr. Ivan Dmochowski, Penn Chemist, and Dusty Carroll, Seneca High School, NJ
  • Chemistry teachers are always searching for new and interesting demos, especially ones that actually tackle important concepts in the curriculum.
