Sphinx With the Sphinx: A Student Reading of Oedipus Tyrannus
3260 South St
This event is presented by the Wolf Humanities Center.
Just down the hall from the Penn Museum’s famous sphinx, the Wolf Humanities Center’s 2022–2023 Forum on Heritage concludes with a staged reading of Oedipus Tyrannus and its tragic resolution of the riddle of the Sphinx.
A verse translation of Sophocles’ Oedipus Tyrannus by Emily Wilson, whose acclaimed translation of The Odyssey was named by The New York Times as one of its 100 notable books of 2018 and was shortlisted for the 2018 National Translation Award, will be read by Girard College high school students with directorial support from director Brooke O’Harra.
Join the event as student-readers present this Athenian tragedy about a surprising and horrific uncovering of hidden family heritage.
The Wolf Humanities Center is Penn’s main hub for interdisciplinary humanities research and public programming. Their goals are to demonstrate how vital the humanities are to the life of the mind and the health of society, and how fundamentally connected they are with many areas of urgent inquiry in medicine, law, business, and the sciences.
