Medieval and Early Modern Studies

The Hispanic Studies graduate program has a long and prestigious history of training students in Medieval and Early Modern Language, Literature and Culture from the Iberian Peninsula.  Faculty specialists include Anthony Esposito (history of the Spanish language, medieval Catalan language and literature), Carlos Pio (medieval Portuguese language and literature), Michael Solomon (medieval and early modern medicine, literary remediation and medievalism) and Jorge Téllez (Colonial Latin America and Early Modern Spain).

Students are encouraged take advantage of the extraordinary resources, study groups, and seminars at Penn such as The Workshop in the History of Material Texts, Medieval-Reniassance seminar, Medievalists@Penn and the Early Modern Iberia Study Group.

Medieval and early modern graduates have access to Penn’s library’s remarkable collection of medieval and early modern, including Henry Charles Lea Library with its impressive collection of early modern documents and the Lawrence J. Schoenberg Collection of late medieval and early modern works.

The program also offers a yearly Summer Paleographic Workshop in Salamanca, Spain, allowing students develop archival skills.
