Assistant Professor Chloe Estep Awarded Long-Term Early Career Fellowship

Chloe Estep, Assistant Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations

Chloe Estep, Assistant Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, has been awarded a Long-Term Early Career Fellowship from the Henry Luce Foundation/American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Program in China Studies. The fellowship enables early-career faculty to take leaves of four to nine months to work full-time on researching and writing a scholarly text.

Estep’s research focuses on poetry, media, and material culture in modern China, as well as the history, theory, and practice of translation. The fellowship will support her work on a forthcoming book, Print Classicism: Poetry, Politics, and Media in Republican China, 1911-1949. The book examines how print periodicals enabled the transformation and modernization of classical aesthetics (including painting and calligraphy) as poets, writers, and artists reckoned with the radical political changes of early 20th-century China.

Estep earned her doctorate in Modern Chinese literature from Columbia University. Her most recent publication is “‘Still holding the pipa to hide half her face’: Visions of Bai Juyi's ‘Song of the Pipa’ in Republican China,” in Nan Nü: Men, Women, and Gender in China in 2021.
